Teaching/Directing:  Mia Riker-Norrie is the Director of The Montclair Voice Studio.  Her students range in age from six to 60+.  In addition to teaching private lessons in her studio, Mia is in the process of founding a brand new opera company, Opera Theatre of Montclair.  Mia has served as the Music Director for the Edgemont Montessori Afterschool Enrichment productions of Wizard of Oz, Jr., Mary Poppins, Annie Jr.The Sound of Music and Peter Pan.  She has also taught enrichment classes, The Fundamentals of Singing, within the Montclair Public Schools.  As Music Director of The Evangelical Covenant Church of Montclair, Mia planned the music for the weekly services, booked guest artists and led worship.  Mia also briefly served as Acting General Manager of The Bleecker Street Opera in NYC.

Performing:  Mia was a Principal Soprano with The Amato Opera Theatre of New York City from 1991-2008.   She has also appeared with other regional companies including Hudson Opera Theatre, Opera Fort Collins and Greater New Britain Opera. Among her operatic repertoire are the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor, Violetta in La Traviata, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Gilda in Rigoletto, The Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Norina in Don Pasquale, Olympia,  in The Tales of Hoffmann, Micaëla in Carmen, Valencienne in The Merry Widow, Birdie in Regina, Musetta in La Bohème, Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Adele in Die Fledermaus

She has appeared with regional orchestras including The Colonial Symphony, The Garden State Philharmonic and The Oratorio Society of New Jersey.  Her orchestral repertoire includes the Haydn Lord Nelson Mass, the Fauré Requiem, the Händel Messiah and Mozart Exsultate, jubilate.    

As a performing member of The Montclair Music Club, Mia appears often in recital in and around Montclair.   She has also performed her signature Opera Cabaret with the YM-YWHA of North Jersey and The Glen Ridge Seniors Club.  Mia has also appeared in recital with The Rehearsal Club and The Saturday Evening Chamber Music Club. 

Mia received a New York Times review for her performance in the Amore Opera production of La Bohème in December of 2009.

Prior to her operatic training, Mia did some regional work in musical theatre and portrayed such roles as Laurey in Oklahoma!, Eve in The Apple Tree, Daisy Mae in Li'l Abner, Fran in High Button Shoes, the Moorish Dancer in Man of La Mancha as well as ensembles of Jesus Christ Superstar and Funny Girl.

 Education:  Mia was a national winner of Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS) (now known as youngArts) and The Connecticut Opera Guild Scholarship Competition.  The late Walter Blazer and David Reeves of Upper Montclair were her long-time teacher and coach, respectively, and she also studied at The Hartt School of Music in Connecticut. 

Her original aspiration was to be a dancer, and Mia studied ballet and other forms of dance seriously for 12 years.

Personal:   In 1988, Mia's beloved voice teacher advised her to go on a European audition tour of the German-speaking countries where opera is a state-supported institution and work was plentiful.  Instead, she went and got married!  As a result, Mia is the mom to three busy kids:  Tom (19), Violetta (16) and Sam (14).  Tom is a freshman majoring in engineering at the University of Minnesota.   Violetta is a professional harpist and a student at Manhattan School of Music Precollege.  Sam is a freshman at Montclair High School and deeply involved in the School of Visual and Performing Arts Her husband of 24 years, David Norrie, is the founder of  Norrie & Associates , a full-service law firm.
